18 March 2016 marks the entry of the Syrian conflict into its sixth year, since its beginning in 2011. On 27 February 2016, a ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia, between the Syrian government and the moderate opposition, came into effect. While this is a welcome development, negotiating a political solution to this issue may not come without complexities and complications that will require careful navigation. For this, an understanding of the roots of this conflict and the various factors that have an influence on it must be taken into account.

On this issue, the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies presents it's Special Report #181, titled 'Roots of the Syrian Crisis', authored by VP Haran, India's former ambassador to Syria (2009-2012).
