Southeast Asia Research Programme (SEARP)
Building bridges and reviving linkages…

The Southeast Asia Research Programme (SEARP) at the Institute of Peace and Conflict studies (IPCS) aims to promote research on Southeast Asia in India, map the existing nature and dynamics of India - Southeast Asia relations, and highlight current political, economic and security developments of mutual concern.

Through a combination of discussions, dialogues and research work, the Programme seeks to achieve its goal of creating avenues for collaboration and fostering understanding between India and ASEAN. More importantly, the Programme emphasises on training the next generation of scholars; besides building capacity within India to focus on Southeast Asia as an academic field of study.

Research and Publications

The Programme aims to promote research on political, social, economic, and security issues related to Southeast Asia. As a part of its activities, the Programme publishes Commentaries, Interviews, Issue Briefs, Special Reports and Research Papers.

Discussions / Conferences / Workshops

The Programme organises discussions, conferences and workshops; the proceedings of these discussions are published as conference/seminar reports and are widely disseminated.

Capacity Building on Southeast Asia

As a part of capacity building on issues relating to Southeast Asia, the Programme provides Internships, holds Colloquies (exclusive discussion series for young and emerging scholars) and encourages them to publish their findings.

Task Forces

In 2013, the Programme is likely to form an Exclusive Task Force on “Moving East: An Agenda for the Third Decade” comprising of intellectuals, scholars and former bureaucrats (from New Delhi and the sub-regions of India), to provide alternative inputs.

The Programme organizes an annual dialogue at the national level to discuss current issues, dynamics and challenges in countries of Southeast Asia. Findings of these dialogues are then published as IPCS Special Reports.

The Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) is the premier South Asian think tank which conducts independent research on and provides an in depth analysis of conventional and non-conventional issues related to national and South Asian security including nuclear issues, disarmament, non-proliferation, weapons of mass destruction, the war on terrorism, counter terrorism , strategies security sector reforms, and armed conflict and peace processes in the region.

For those in South Asia and elsewhere, the IPCS website provides a comprehensive analysis of the happenings within India with a special focus on Jammu and Kashmir and Naxalite Violence. Our research promotes greater understanding of India's foreign policy especially India-China relations, India's relations with SAARC countries and South East Asia.

Through close interaction with leading strategic thinkers, former members of the Indian Administrative Service, the Foreign Service and the three wings of the Armed Forces - the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, - the academic community as well as the media, the IPCS has contributed considerably to the strategic discourse in India.
