Nuclear Security Programme (NSP)

Since its inception, the Institute has been working on various issues relating to WMD security, including nuclear, chemical, biological and radiological weapons. The Institute has been also consistently working on bilateral and trilateral nuclear issues between India, Pakistan and China, besides global nuclear disarmament.

The Nuclear Security Programme (NSP) within the IPCS is the oldest. The NSP, besides research, publications and discussion also holds regular track-II dialogues between India, Pakistan and China and also engages with numerous think tanks and research institutes in the US and Europe and various nuclear security issues.

The programme aims to promote research on security issues related to nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological weapons. As a part of its activities, the programme publishes articles, interviews, issue briefs, special reports, etc.

Discussions / Conferences / Workshops

The programme organises discussions, conferences and workshops on issues, besides organising peer reviews on selective issues related to CBRN security. The Proceedings of these discussions have been mostly published as conference/seminar and widely disseminated.

Capacity Building on Nuclear Security

As a part of capacity building on nuclear security issues, the Programme organises an annual workshop for young scholars, and also holds a Colloquy, exclusively for young and emerging scholars. The programme also has an exclusive Interns & Visiting Fellows program offered to scholars all over the world.

Task Forces

The Programme, during 2011-12, constituted a working group/ task force of experts from the Indian strategic community - academia, bureaucracy, military and scientific community to review the India’s Nuclear Doctrine which finalised its report and is likely to be released during mid 2012. In the near future, the Programme is likely to constitute another task force on India and Global Nuclear Disarmament.

The Programme has been organising a trilateral dialogue between India, China and Pakistan, one of its kind at the global level on nuclear security issues. Started in 2008, the Programme has organised five rounds of dialogues in Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore, Shanghai, and Colombo.

The Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) is the premier South Asian think tank which conducts independent research on and provides an in depth analysis of conventional and non-conventional issues related to national and South Asian security including nuclear issues, disarmament, non-proliferation, weapons of mass destruction, the war on terrorism, counter terrorism , strategies security sector reforms, and armed conflict and peace processes in the region.

For those in South Asia and elsewhere, the IPCS website provides a comprehensive analysis of the happenings within India with a special focus on Jammu and Kashmir and Naxalite Violence. Our research promotes greater understanding of India's foreign policy especially India-China relations, India's relations with SAARC countries and South East Asia.

Through close interaction with leading strategic thinkers, former members of the Indian Administrative Service, the Foreign Service and the three wings of the Armed Forces - the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, - the academic community as well as the media, the IPCS has contributed considerably to the strategic discourse in India.
